FIRST MINE PLANNING WORKSHOP

The First Mine Planning Workshop was successfully held from 19 to 20 November in Santiago, Chile. The objective of this workshop was to offer a space where professionals in geology and mining could analyse and discuss the recent developments and trends in mine planning, production programming and production control processes.

The workshop, organised by the Universidad de Chile and Gecamin, gathered 113 participants from Argentina, Australia, Chile, Peru, the United Kingdom and South Africa. In this respect, MINEPLANNING 2009 had a very successful attendance and fully surpassed the expectations of the Organising Committee. Attendees included mining company executives, academics, engineers and geologists that work in mine planning.

The technical programme included 30 presentations given by authors from Australia, Brasil, Chile, Indonesia and the United Kingdom, representing the principal mining and consulting companies, software providers, universities and research centres. The presentations covered such topics as: market conditions and mine planning strategies, geo-metallurgical mine planning, risk and uncertainty in mine planning, cut off grades and production sequencing, mathematical programme models and tools for mine planning.

MINEPLANNING will be organised again in 20 - 22 October 2010 in Hotel Enjoy, Antofagasta. In June of next year, the Universidad de Chile, together with the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Gecamin, will hold the IV International Conference on Mining Innovation – MININ 2010, which will cover mine planning as one of its areas of interest.

The Department of Mining Engineering of the Universidad de Chile and the Organising Committe of this workshop thank all of those who collaborated to promote this event and review abstracts. They also thank the session chairs and sponsoring companies, and especially the authors for sharing their experiences in mine planning.
Of the total participants, 78 were from mining companies, 8 from suppliers, 13 from consulting companies and 17 were students and professors from the Universidad de Chile, the Universidad de Santiago and the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
In June of 2010, the IV International Conference on Mining Innovation – MININ 2010 will be held in Santiago, Chile, and will cover mine planning as an area of interest. For this reason, we would like to take advantage of this opportunity to invite all participants of MINEPLANNING to participate in MININ 2010. The Organising Committee of MININ 2010 has already contacted the authors of the most outstanding presentations to invite them to present a full-length paper and contribute to the already substantial technical programme of MININ 2010. A total of up to 100 technical papers are expected for the conference.
